Humanity discovered the first jump point almost a half a century before anyone knew what it did. The discovery of what the jump points offered came with great joy tempered by one sad fact.
The amount of energy required for a ship to use a jump point was so steep that fusion power simple wasn't efficient enough to trigger the points. A couple of anti-matter powered vessels were able to trigger the points successfully, but anti-matter was both dangerous and cripplingly expensive.
While some people began to design large anti-matter 'jump ferries' humanities space program withered. The discovery of jump resonance material was a complete acci

On the Edge of Known Space
____ _______
(Super-science, human-only, long time space faring)
Power: Fusion is the most popular power source, used in everything both planet side and space born. Anti-matter is used in a handful of extremely high performance vessels, but is considered too hazardous to be worth it.
Portable Power: Power cells are compact enough that anything that isn't directly self-powered will use power cells instead. Recently the Edge has been using inferior-quality resonance crystals instead. The crystals have a much denser storage capacity than power cells, but anyone from the inner rings thinks the practice is highly sacrilegious.

The Galactic Race
The universe is populated by many intelligent species; many have been space faring for as long as humanity has been able to use fire. The largest technological expo of the times, the Great Race, is going to have a new entrant this year. Nothing will be the same again.
Galactic Council: A semi-governing body of FTL-capable alien species. The council has very little power, but instead maintains the standards galactic trade needs to survive. They regulate what can be sold to 'Minor' races. They archive all territory claims. The council also runs the Great Race and determines its rules and route.

Power: Fusion generally. Anti-matter generators are available, but anti-matter itself is very rare and expensive. (See notes on anti-matter below.) "Cold" fusion is also available, but while cold fusion plants are much smaller, they produce only a fraction of the power and cost almost as much. Cold fusion is most often seen as a back-up power source and in small vehicles that need more then fuel cells, but less than hot fusion. (Surface-to-Orbit shuttles, large land vehicles, large ocean vessels, etc.)
Potable Power: Power cells exist in the form of rechargeable loops of superconductive ma
Artificer Armor: Represent the ultimate in Artificer enchantment. These are mystical power armor powered by magic and will.
They are recent creations, made possible with the restructuring and refunding of the Artificer organization.
The suits are an old idea taken to a new extreme. Since the medieval ages Artificers have attempted to enchant plate armor with more and more enchantments, particularly strength increasing and weight reduction effects. They very rapidly passed beyond the point most mortals could power, and finally hit the limit that an artificer could power. (90% of all surviving medieval plate is enchanted in at least one w
